Minneapolis Minnesota – The City of Lakes & Parks

Boasting more public parks than any other city its size in the nation, easy travel times to many great attractions and an endless list of activities available, Minneapolis has been attracting outdoor enthusiasts as well as large corporations for decades. Outdoor recreational opportunities include biking, hiking, fishing, boating and canoeing, to name just a few. The name Minneapolis means the City of Lakes, but you’ll also find a variety of inviting paths, regional parks, neighbor parks, recreation centers and more. Minneapolis Minnesota has more than 180 parks, each providing excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Minneapolis Chain of Lakes

The Minneapolis Chain of Lakes is the most visited natural resource in Minnesota, drawing more than 5.5 million visitors annually. The Chain of Lakes, is comprised of a number of parks along a chain of connecting lakes. A 13.3 miles biking/walking/jogging path encircles the entire Chain, providing a beautiful setting for activity. The Chain of Lakes district consists of Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, Cedar Lake and Brownie Lake.

Grand Rounds Scenic Byway

The Grand Rounds, a National Scenic Byways, is a system of lovely trails, paths and roadways in a totally unique urban setting. Composed of seven districts, it creates a loop over 50 miles long around the City, offering an unsurpassed view of Minneapolis by bike, ‘blades, foot or vehicle. The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway was built in the 1930s as part of Civilian Conservation Corps projects

Chain of Lakes Water Quality Management Citizens Advisory Committee

The Chain of Lakes Water Quality Management Citizens Advisory Committee is composed of 34 members from neighborhoods, neighborhood organizations, appointees, business owners, recreational use groups, and environmental organizations. The majority of the initiative was locally funded by the MPRB ($1.5 million), MCWD ($6.1 million), City of Minneapolis ($2.6 million), City of St. Louis Park ($663,000), and Hennepin County. Critical diagnostic and seed money was provided by the MPCA ($1.2 million). The U.S. EPA section 319 funds totaled $255,000 and were used to fund kick-off efforts for the education campaign, a demonstration project on Lake Calhoun showing the effects of alum treatments, and research on the interaction between alum and milfoil (an invasive species).

The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board operates 49 year-round, neighborhood-based Recreation Centers. Programs, classes and special events are offered to residents of the entire Twin Cities metropolitan area.
